she was his sideline sweetheart
blowing him kisses while he was catching passes
the football only fueled his dream
to join a lifelong military team
on graduation day, when he came clean
and she broke down and begged him not to leave

he took a ball point pen
got down on one knee and held her hand
drew on her finger a wedding band,
and said babe, I ain’t gone yet

life is made up of those little moments

Just a few weeks after the wedding
he got called into training out west
then she started feeling funny,
the doctor told her “honey, better make room for a kid”

nine months later she went into labor,
and he took the first flight back home
ran as fast as he could into the waiting room,
staring into the eyes of his son, he said

She wished that she could stop time, and rewind.

The letter said that he was killed in action
